HSA

The YMCA of Metro Denver now accepts payments from Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Savings Accounts (FSA).

This means there are now even more ways to access YMCA membership, programs and services. You can use pre-tax funds to pay for health and wellness services that have been approved by a medical provider. This can make it more affordable to use the Y to take care of yourself and your health.

Read on for more information about using your HSA or FSA at the Y.

What are HSAs and FSAs?

HSAs and FSAs are savings accounts — often provided through an employer — that let you set aside money on a pre-tax basis to pay for qualified medical and other expenses. The difference between the two is that FSAs are usually "use it or lose it" within the fiscal year, while funds in HSAs can be used at any time. Also, HSAs are portable — so if you leave your job, FSA funds are forfeited but HSA funds can be transferred to another account/employer.

To learn more about HSAs and FSAs, contact your employer human relations department or consult this HSA/FSA resource from the IRS.

What YMCA services can I use my HSA/FSA for?

A variety of Y services may be eligible for payment with HSA/FSA, including:

  • YMCA Membership
  • Health Coaching
  • Nutrition Consultation
  • YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program
  • Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring
  • Massage Therapy
  • Personal Training
  • Kickstart Your Confidence wellness program

To be an HSA/FSA qualifying expense, the service typically must be a part of a treatment plan for a specific medical condition. It is your responsibility to ensure the service is covered and that required documentation has been procured. You may request a purchase receipt at the front desk or by contacting us.

How do I pay with my HSA/FSA at the Y?

Simply use your HSA/FSA card as you would a credit or debit card to make a YMCA payment. If you are paying at the front desk, please let the staff know that you are using an HSA or FSA card.

The YMCA does not require proof of insurance coverage or a letter of medical necessity. It is your responsibility to ensure the service is covered and that required documentation has been procured. Every insurance carrier is different, so be sure to confirm that your insurance carrier covers these services.

The YMCA cannot guarantee that an HSA/FSA provider will cover the program or service costs. If the service is declined by your insurance company, you are responsible for the payment.

What if I don’t have an HSA/FSA debit card?

If you do not have a debit card for your HSA/FSA account, you can pay out of pocket and apply for reimbursement from your insurance company. Contact your insurance company for instructions on how to do this. You will likely need a receipt for your purchase from the Y and a letter of medical necessity from your doctor. You may request a purchase receipt at the front desk or by contacting us.
